I'm not an artist: Five items from Ocarina of Time forged by three master smiths.

Five items from Ocarina of Time forged by three master smiths.

Megaton Hammer: This hammer is swung with an even greater force than its already incredible mass would suggest. The strike of this hammer can shatter stone, flatten steel, or even cause a small earthquake. Legends speak of a Goron ancestor hero wielding the hammer in battle with Volvagia, the fire dragon. The ancestor hero sealed the dragon’s spirit in the burning heart of a volcano.

Training under a master smith, three apprentices bickered bitterly over who was the greatest smith. When the master decided to retire, they challenged their three pupils to craft a flawless forging hammer. The smith that crafted a perfect hammer would inherit the master’s entire workshop. Each of the three apprentices poured all their skills into a hammer they hoped was the equal of the challenge. The master rejected each of the hammers for a different reason. They became resigned to close their shop instead of passing it to a new master. The apprentices realized that individually, they could not succeed, but together they were more than capable. Working together, the apprentices forged a truly flawless hammer. When they went to present the hammer to their master, the master had departed. The former master left three pairs of golden tongs, signifying each smith as a master.

Kokiri Sword: The Kokiri Sword is the only sword Link is able to wield as a child. It’s waiting for Link in a chest at the end of the game’s introductory dungeon. Without this humble sword, Link could never have eventually risen to the mantle the Hero of Time.

The three masters quickly earned a reputation for creating works that were both beautiful and functional. On the first day of spring during the third year of the masters’ tenure, a foreign noble came to the workshop and commissioned an elegant mithril rapier to be completed before spring’s end. The smiths labored day and night working the difficult material. The masters finished their work as the sun rose on the final day of spring. Just as the smiths placed the finished blade in its scabbard, the noble appeared suddenly in the shop. They snatched the blade and disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Where the odd noble stood was a pile of strange gold nuggets, moonstones, and diamonds easily worth twice the quoted price for the work. Along with the treasure, the smiths received an invitation to visit the Vernal Court of the Fey.

Master Sword: The Master Sword is probably the most important usable item in the Zelda Franchise. It is also one of the most important items in Ocarina of Time. The sword allows Link to travel through time and is the gateway to the Sacred Realm. The sword is also necessary to defeating Ganondorf, the usurper of the sacred power.

The masters came together to create an offering to the three goddesses of creation in thanks for their continued prosperity. For an entire year, the three smiths worked to make an immaculate ceremonial blade as an offering. Once the blade was completed, the smiths set out on a pilgrimage to the Temple of the Three. There they cast the blade into the great flame to be consumed and its essence given wholly to the divine. The three goddesses found the blade so magnificent that each bestowed upon it a blessing. The first goddess blessed the sword to be untouched by time and never dull or rust. The second goddess blessed the sword to strike through even the strongest of defenses. The third goddess blessed the sword to find its way into the possession of true heroes in their time of greatest need. The goddesses cast the sword back into the material world where it lay hidden under the coals of the great temple flame for years. It was only after the temple had been abandoned to ruin, did a wandering would-be hero find the blade among the long cold ashes.

Biggoron Sword: The massive blade is the capstone of the trading sequence in Ocarina of Time. It is so large it requires two hands to wield effectively. This means Link must sacrifice the protection of his shield if he wants to use a sword twice as powerful as the Master Sword.

A headstrong battlemage commissioned the smiths to forge a massive greatsword from the shards of a staff rumored to have been owned by a great mage. The smiths were instructed to ensure, above all else, the staff’s ability to amplify arcane energies was maintained in the greatsword. As the smiths forged the blade, the battlemage made increasing demands and offered opinions ceaselessly. The overbearing battlemage was eventually banned from visiting the workshop until the blade was finished. To ensure the blade would act properly as a focus, they were unable to maintain their commitment to beautiful work. Unconcerned with the beauty of the blade, the battlemage was impressed by the smiths’ excellent work. The battlemage wielding the greatsword in the grand fighting pits brought many customers and would-be apprentices searching out the three crossed tongs, the symbol of the masters’ workshop.

Broken Goron Sword: The broken Goron sword is part of the Ocarina of Time trading sequence. A master craftsperson rewards Link with this broken tool when Link returns his stolen saw. At least they knew they were giving Link the short end of the stick in that trade.

The greatsword quickly became synonymous with the battlemage. Stories of a fiery tempered mountain mage wielding a sword fit for a giant would often find their way to the workshop. The masters always enjoyed hearing about the adventures the battlemage undertook with the help of their work. When a traveling merchant returned the shards of the blade to the masters, they also brought the tale of the ultimate fate of the weapon. The battlemage had traveled to a distant land to test their mettle against ever increasing challenges. They must have met a worthy challenge as the shattered sword was discovered in a magic blasted field devoid of all life. The shards of the greatsword are now kept on a wall of the masters’ workshop where it hangs in pieces, never to be reforged.

This is probably the last time I draw the true to game Master Sword. I do hope that you think it is worthy of its lofty mantle.

Merry Crimbus to those that celebrate the holiday.

Please do not profit off my work without my consent but feel free to use this personally as you see fit.

Make sure to remember to be excellent to everyone.
