I'm not an artist: Five items from Link’s Awakening that you could find in a Merfolk Ambassador’s suite.

Five items from Link’s Awakening that you could find in a Merfolk Ambassador’s suite.

Magic rod: While this rod may appear to be generic in its magical properties, it can really only throw fireballs. However limited the magic in this rod may be, Link gets a lot of mileage out of this bottomless Roman candle.

One must carry an ambassador’s scepter of office to be recognized as an emissary of the Merfolk Diaspora. Holding the scepter keeps the bearer’s skin from drying out when outside of water, allows them to breathe air or water interchangeably, and offers the ability to communicate in the major languages of whatever area the ambassador is stationed. When a new ambassador is appointed, the scepter is presented to them as part of a secretive ritual that links the new owner to the scepter.

Sleepy Mushroom: A magical mushroom that has unpredictable effects when consumed raw. Link can take a mushroom to his friendly local witch’s shop (FLWS) to have her process the mushroom into magical powder for Link.

Ambassador Locutor suffers from terrible insomnia when they are traveling on business. The only remedy for the Ambassador’s insomnia is an ominous mushroom that constantly sheds spores that cause severe drowsiness when inhaled. Ambassador Locutor says they never dream when sleeping under the influence of the spores. On such nights, the Ambassador’s aids give the sleeping Ambassador’s chambers a wide berth as nightmarish apparitions have reportedly been seen dancing about the sleeping diplomat.

Surf harp: This harp is one of the eight instruments of the sires. Its song is reminiscent of sprinkling water.

Vashj Illdari is currently assigned to oversee trade negotiations between Locathah crafting guilds, nomadic Merfolk herders, and a landfolk merchant marine. The three groups all claim absolute rights to a shallow stretch of protected waters perfect for a small settlement, grazing of herds, or the resupplying of vessels. The many days of fruitless negotiation would have surely spent all of the diplomat’s patience had it not been for her nightly ritual of playing her beloved harp in tune with tide and the surf.

Roc’s feather: This feather is rumored to have come from the massive bird large enough to hunt elephants like eagles hunt salmon. Holding this massive feather, Link feels much lighter and is able to leap over enemies and pits.

Not all diplomats representing the Merfolk Diaspora are Merfolk. Yawan, an awakened octopus, is a diplomat best known for their many writings. Yawan is often the drafting author of resolutions and agreements they helped negotiate. Writing not just official documents, Yawan is a prolific letter writer. Having no fewer than ten letters in various stages of completion, one would expect their tentacles to be stained with ink. Yawan drafts all their works with her quill of transcription. The quill can write as fast as the ambassador speaks, works underwater, and can even write upside down.

Angler key: This key shuts off a waterfall to reveal the hidden entrance to a damp fish themed dungeon.

While not an official sign of office, most diplomats of the Diaspora are accompanied by these strange key fish. No official statement from any official in the Diaspora have confirmed the purpose of the fish. With no official statement, rumors prosper. The most popular story is the fish’s lure unlock a chest that holds an orb of farspeaking allowing the nation with no state to maintain order of such a large area.

Magic the Gathering and Warcraft are the two biggest influences for me when it comes to mer races. I think the two most interesting versions of Merfolk are the Riverfolk of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor and the River Heralds of Ixalan.

I have gone back to last week and put all the links I missed.

Please don’t profit from my work without my consent, but feel free to use this personally as you like.

Go out there and be excellent to everyone.
