Heart of Tefiti: Stolen by the trickster Maui, the heart must be returned to Tefiti, the great mother, to stop the spread of decay filling the world with monsters and draining life from land and sea.

My kid loves Moana. I drew this for them. I also made a quick cardboard version with some sharpie and string. They LOVE that 5 minute craft. You don’t have to be great at art to make something someone will love. 

In looking up the characters’ origins, I was surprised to find out Te Fiti seems to be a whole cloth creation for the movie, but they just used Maui’s existing mythological identity. That isn’t surprising, but it does feel odd.

The Minish Cap: A tragic wishing well

 A tragic wishing well

Blue Rupee: This lustrous blue rupee is worth 500% the value of its simple green cousins. Five rupees can’t get you much, but they quickly add up for Link during his travels since he finds them in grass, dirt, rocks, chests, rewards, and gifts.

This used to be a wishing well that folks from all over would come to and try to sway the whims of fate. One tragic night, a person was drowned in the wells auspicious waters. Ever since that night, the well has been cursed and the surrounding lands haunted by vengeful spirits.

 A simple cup for a carpenter

Mt.Crenel Mineral Water: This verdant mineral water can only be found on Mr. Crenel and is only used to fertilize a special variety of beanstalk that grows on Mt. Crenel. 

Before you is every type of cup you could imagine. How can you hope to find the one true grail hidden among all the choices? The only advice I have to give is, “choose wisely.”

Growing up right as CGI started to look really good, I have sadly watched practical effects dwindle in modern cinema. Some of my favorite effects are the supernatural deaths from the Indiana Jones movies.

The Minish Cap: The Often Pouring Pitcher

 The Often Pouring Pitcher

Water: Plain water held in an empty bottle. Link can scoop up fresh water and use it to water bean stalks and put out fires. 

The Everflowing Ewer held a limitless supply of water, but it was accidentally destroyed by questing knights. This lesser vessel, the Often Pouring Pitcher, can slowly fill itself to the brim over the course of a few hours. While that isn’t enough to save an entire village from drought, the pitcher is enough to keep a home well stocked with cool clean water.

While the actual experience of playing through the everflowing ewer quest in Oblivion isn’t wonderful, the lore and flavor have always stuck with me, and it is one of my go-to legendary artifacts that aren’t immediately game-breaking for my home games.

The Minish Cap: The Black Cauldron

 The Black Cauldron

Water Element: The third element Link recovers is found in the Minish-sized Temple of Droplets. Link must defeat the relatively titanic Big Octorok, probably a regular-sized Octorok, to win this element. Link infuses this third element into the White Sword to improve the White Sword’s abilities, most importantly allowing Link to split into three copies of himself.

The nascent Wight King had been secretly raiding graveyards and battlefields to gather enough bodies to create a skeletal horde. Each body must be boiled in the evil cauldron for a night and a day before it rises in undeath as Cauldron Born, soullessly obeying the will of the cauldron’s master. After years of quietly defaming the land’s dead, the Wight King has announced themself to the world at the head of a vast skeletal army poised to conquer and pillage.

The Chronicles of Prydain were not on my radar as a kid at all. I was actually a fairly reluctant reader as a kid, having issues with focus and restlessness. The series did inspire one of my favorite movies as a kid, the impeccably strange The Black Cauldron, which inspired today’s drawings. I recently read through the whole Prydain series as an adult and enjoyed it. I look forward to reading it out loud to my little one when they are a bit older.

Drewly: Pearl of the Sirens

 Pearl of the Sirens

Pearl of the Sirens: Fashioned by a sea seductress who didn’t want to immediately drown and devour their victims. This necklace allows drylanders to survive beneath the water for as long as the seductress wishes.

We have been going strong with drewly for three entire weeks!

For a random one-off item drawing for my homebrew Pathfinder game, I am very happy with how this turned out.

Four Swords Adventures: A fine bottle of oil and vinegar.

 A fine bottle of oil and vinegar.

Blue Royal Jewel: The four royal jewels possess the power to open a path to the Palace of Winds when brought together. Each of the jewels was guarded by a knight of Hyrule before Ganon conquered the land and infused it with his darkness. Now the four jewels are guarded by ghastly knights in the dark realm. Link can recover the blue royal jewel by defeating the transformed knight in The Field.

Round-bottom flasks are a sign of wealth at dinner parties as propriety dictates an attendant must be always present to hold them when not in use. Double-walled vessels are another display of wealth at parties because only master glass blowers are skilled enough to make such vessels perfectly and most are used for alchemical pursuits instead of tableware. This elegant bottle of oil and vinegar casually offered to guests at dinner is a statement to be sure for this no-name merchant on the rise.

This drawing isn’t perfect, but I remember feeling really good about how well this drawing came out working from reference. A great piece of advice I ignored for too long was to look at pictures of the thing you want to draw to draw it better. Look at the pictures the whole time too, not just the preliminary sketches.

Wind Waker: Trident of the Sea Sovereign.

Trident of the Sea Sovereign.

Big Catch Flag: Initially, Link must trade a sickle moon flag with one of the traveling merchants of the Great Sea in exchange for the big catch flag. This is another step in the decoration item trading sequence, so Link can trade this flag for the next flag in the set or place it on a joyous pedestal on Windfall Island.

Legends speak of a great island nation that dominated the seas using god-like magics and wondrous machines. This wonder of the world was swallowed up by the seas they believed they commanded for the hubris and corruption of their sovereigns. While the sea mercilessly crushed the sovereign, the regular people of the island were each given a small fraction of the power held in the Sea Soverign’s Fork so that they might breathe water as well as air and rebuild their nation in cooperation with the sea instead of in domination of it.

That is a socialist revolution retelling of Atlantis. Imagine searching for the lost city to claim its god-like artifact only to find the fork a powerless token of a failed social order.

A red umbrella for Spring showers.

Umbrella: A traveler with an umbrella is asking for rain, but a traveler without one is a fool. A mage with a wand is asking for trouble, but a mage without one is a fool. For the traveling mage, the umbrella wand, be ready for whatever nature or the supernatural throw your way.

I often approach these like a copywriter for an advertising agency. I don’t know if others find that annoying, but I like to imagine how an in-world salesperson might try to get an adventurer to buy their wares.

Wind Waker: A canteen of pure forest spring water.

A canteen of pure forest spring water.

Forest Water: This mystical water can only be found in the Forest Haven, home of the Great Deku Tree and the Koroks, wood spirits that tend to nature. The water has magical energies that imbue life into the Deku and the Koroks. Its power diminishes if it is ever taken out of the haven, which makes watering eight holy saplings spread across the great sea a difficult task. If Link is able to accomplish the task, he is rewarded with a Piece of Heart.

Survival in the wilderness is almost always about finding drinkable water. If you can find water, you can at least give yourself enough time to starve to death. No explorer worth their salt should go anywhere without at least one canteen or waterskin they can rely on.

There are so many versions and incarnations of the water of life in myth and legend from around the world. I always found learning about folklore and myth fascinating because you can see how central themes repeat themselves across cultures, places, and times.

Wind Waker: A jug of seawater

 A jug of seawater.

Bottled Water: Fresh water scooped up into an empty bottle. Link can pour this water out when something needs a quenching. One important use of water in Link’s journey is when he must water withered bomb flowers on Dragon Roost Island to gain entry into the Dragon Roost Caves.

You’ve found it, the jug of endless seawater. Sort of a sick trick since you can’t drink the water and most desalination methods will be hampered by the critters, flotsam, and jetsam that occasionally spurt out. On top of that, the gurgling noise it makes is just plain unsettling.

Based on the real gulping jugs that use the jugs’ odd shape to make them gulp in air intermittently while pouring. I also thought an Ewer of Endless water is a world-breaking artifact that isn’t provocative like a blade that can cut reality or a book that can rewrite fate but could have a significant impact if used properly. What adventures would happen in a desert society centered around a magical carafe that was the only source of water for miles in any direction?

Six items from Majora’s Mask you could find in a Pacific Northwest town.

Mystery Milk: In the rerelease of Majora’s Mask for the 3DS Link is tasked with fetching mystery milk and delivering it within 2 minutes of playtime. If Link is successful, he is rewarded with the empty bottle used to transport the milk. If Link takes too long, the mystery milk cuddles and becomes moldy milk and Link is only rewarded with a foul bottle of rot. 

According to the bartender at the Curdled Calf, the dust-covered bottle of milk above the bar is supposedly the hallowed milk from the Earth Mother’s very own breast. Consuming the milk grants the drinker godlike powers. Unfortunately, the bottle is magically sealed, and no one has even loosened the lid after years of attempts.

Raft: I had just drawn what I feel is a pretty good raft, so I didn't want to just draw another bundle of sticks. This is supposed to be an inflatable raft emergency raft, but it could represent many things since it doesn't have many anchoring details.

Power Glove: This heavy metal glove could be a powerful gauntlet, part of a set of armor that needs to be reassembled, or an animated hand monster. This could even be a fantasy power fist for those pillaging ideas from the Fallout series.
