Drewly: Crab shell fighting gloves

 Crab shell fighting gloves

Crab shell fighting gloves: These magical boxing gloves were crafted from the chiton of a giant shipwrecker crab for a treant prince on rumspringa. If that sentence doesn’t scream homebrewed ttrpg campaign, I don’t know what does.

The Minish Cap: Mole Mitts

 Mole Mitts

Mole Mitts: These gloves allow Link to burrow through soft soils and dig holes into the earth. Link must explore the Fortress of the Winds to earn the mole mitts and begin his adventures in digging obsessively for rupees and hearts when he is in need.

Badgermoles are the undisputed masters of tunneling. It would be sacrilege to hunt and kill such a noble beast, but their carcasses can be harvested if shown the proper respect. With badgermole claws and leather, digging gloves can be fashioned that let the wearer almost swim through the earth.

The bit from Avatar where the Earth Kingdom ruler just had a regular bear instead of a mystical hybrid remains one of my favorite bits from that show.

Wind Waker: Diving gloves from the lost city of Rapture.

Diving gloves from the lost city of Rapture.

Power Bracelets: Wearing this pair of bracelets gives Link incredible strength. Allowing him to lift and throw boulders, or pigs, with ease. Link earns the bracelets in Fire Mountain by slaying all the enemies in a room in a set time. The chest containing the bracelets will only appear if he can conquer the challenge in the allotted time.

These gloves were designed for the transhuman guardians of a city hidden on the bottom of the ocean. These guardians needed to be able to traverse the crushing depths of the seafloor and wield strange mutant powers. With these gloves, the guardians didn’t need to take off their diving equipment to use their abilities, and in time they stopped taking their diving suits off all together.

This week’s item is brought to you by the fantastic Bioshock and Bioshock 2 and Rapture, its terrible failed undersea metropolis.

I vote in the 2022 elections in the U.S.A. and I hope that you voted if you were eligible to vote. Every vote counts. Many of these races that are still being decided are being decided by a few thousand votes.

Be excellent to everyone.

Four Swords: An irresistible glove from Four Swords.

An irresistible glove from Four Swords.

Magnetic Glove: Link all tools in Four Swords, the magnetic glove is found on item pedestals found throughout the game’s procedurally generated stages. Using the glove, a Link can push or pull other Links. You can use this power to help your allies dodge enemy attacks, cross otherwise impassible gaps, or just make sure they can’t pick up the rupees you’ve got your eye on. The Link carrying the glove can also push or pull themself against magnetic blocks that can be found in the levels where the magnetic gloves appear.

This odd looking glove is what gave Samar the Iron Hand their fearsome name. Even before they replaced their missing hand with this magnetic prosthesis, they were fond of disarming their opponents and hoarding the hard won trophies. After contracting a fatal wasting sickness, the pirate secreted away to their hidden cache where they could ensure no one else might enjoy all the gold, silver, and steel they collected, nor the powerful iron hand that made it all possible.

My life is still in a fairly large tumult. I’m currently moving and dealing with the school year starting during a pandemic for the second time. I’m a bit spread thin these days, but I really enjoy taking the time to write out my ideas for these item cards. I’m also still working through all the cards in the Wind Waker game, but progress on that has been slow going.

In America, we are still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. If you can get vaccinated and haven’t yet, I beg you to go get your vaccine to help keep yourself and everyone else safe and to hopefully put this pandemic in the rearview of our lives.

I also wanted to mention that the news is full of record breaking weather events. These are the result of human caused climate change and if you think anything else you have not listened to what the experts on the matter have been screaming for years. A UN report concluded that it was we humans who are responsible for making the only planet we have any hope of inhabiting for generations much harder to inhabit. I need to do better to make my climate footprint smaller, so does everyone else, but really we need systemic action from the top down to say that addressing and possibly reversing climate change is a priority that we are willing to put time and money into.

There is also a bunch of new in the US under the general topic of voting and health care access being shrunk while access to weapons and the ability to act negligently without much recourse increases. That sucks. I hope that one day America can figure out that gun ownership is a lot less important than free and open access to healthcare, food, housing, and education.

Thanks for stopping by this week. I hope to see you next week with another item from Four Swords.

Until then, be excellent to everyone.

Fan Art: My contribution to the Bernie’s mittens meme

The Twin Fists of Malaphon in the Aspect of Sanders

Twin Fists: These fist weapons knew a different aspect when they were used by the gods in their fight against the titans. In this aspect, they are being used to fight against mortal tyrants, societal inequity, and the cold.

This is both my take on the Twin Fists of Malaphon from Hades and my contribution to the the internet’s eager response to the mittens Bernie Sanders wore to the Presidential Inauguration on January 20th, 2021. If I had to do some light game design for what this aspect’s special power could be, I would say the gloves  either do increased damage to elites while doing decreased damage to non-elites or the damage dealt by the special is evenly distributed to all enemies.

—————

I sincerely hope that the 46th president is a far better president than the 45th. Not that it will be that hard, but I want to make sure that real positive change that improves life for all people actually happens. Here’s to equal and available access to healthcare, education, shelter, food, and all other basic human rights.

Be excellent to everyone.

Not an artist: Five items from Oracle of Seasons that are tools of the apocalypse

Five items from Oracle of Seasons that are tools of the apocalypse

Magnetic Glove: Found in the Unicorn’s Cave, the magnetic gloves allow Link to push and pull metallic objects based on their weight and polarity. Every time Link activates the gloves, they switch polarity from positive to negative which means the object, or Link if the object is heavy enough, is either repulsed or attracted to the glove. I have used a similar mechanic in my games, but I just gave the glove the ability to manifest a limited form of telekinesis that only works on magnetic metals.

This mechanical fist is a poor replica of the hand of an immortal watcher. With this approximation of the divine, gifted mortals might focus their limited abilities enough to momentarily pierce the veil separating the mortal world from other realms. The wearer might lure a lesser being from the other realms into our world, but even a lesser spirit has the power to unleash untold destruction in the mundane sphere.

I'm not an artist: Six items from Ocarina of Time two alchemists would use.

Six items from Ocarina of Time two alchemists would use.

Kokiri Boots: Link’s first pair of boots. These boots somehow fit child and adult Link equally well.

Before becoming known as the Falling-Star Alchemist, Sonya Li was famous for her kickboxing skills. She never officially competed for a title, but those that watched her spar believed she was the equal of any fighter. She earned the Falling-Star moniker with her thunderous kicks enhanced by impressive alchemy

I'm not an artist: Powerful forces and an irredeemable object

Five items from A Link to the Past.

Magic Hammer: The last hammer I drew was for blacksmithing. This hammer is a wooden mallet suitable for wood working or head bonking. I know that a knot in the center of a mallet head would probably lead to a broken mallet, but I love the way knots look.

This could be the mallet used by the hermit monk who built the Temple of the Five Bells. The monk, with their trusted donkey, hiked into the trackless peaks of the Mountains of Heavenly Silence with a vision of founding an isolated temple. The monk and donkey were not seen for nearly a decade. The next time the monk was seen, they were erecting a sign post that directed travelers to the new temple. It is said, that when the first traveling monks arrived at the Temple of the Five Bells, the hermit carpenter welcomed them and then sat down with an elderly donkey and the pair died at the same moment, having seen their life’s' work completed.

The heartwood of an ancient tree is a powerful material component. That is especially true when the tree is a treant elder that has been bonded with the hamadryad matron of the western wilderness millennia. During a brief moment of privacy, the elder treant pulled this mallet from their own heart and gave it to a group of outsiders while saying, "Swing this at the right moment so that the forests will be there for our children's children." This act of creation claimed the elder's life. The first forest spirits to discover the outsiders with the elder's lifeless body assumed the outsiders slew the treant. In their grief they were unwilling to hear the outsiders’ story. The outsiders managed to escape with the mallet and are now hunted by avenging forest spirits and colonial agents eager to see the untamed forest fall to axe and saw.

Zelda Items: First five from The Legend of Zelda II: Link's Adventure

Here are the first five items from The Legend of Zelda II: Link's Adventure.

Power Glove: This heavy metal glove could be a powerful gauntlet, part of a set of armor that needs to be reassembled, or an animated hand monster. This could even be a fantasy power fist for those pillaging ideas from the Fallout series
