 Haunted Candelabra

Fire Element: Atop Mount Crenel, deep in the Cave of Flames, the Fire Element is guarded by a turtle dragon that Link must defeat. After defeating the beast, Link can take the Earth and Fire elements to the Elemental Sanctuary and begin the reforging of the Picori blade. With two elements, the newly dubbed white sword has the power to split Link into two copies.

This candelabra was recovered from a supposedly haunted manor. According to local gossip, the lord of the manor was cursed, and so were all of his unfortunate servants. The candelabra is certainly a curio, as its candles never burn lower, and it has a habit of tipping towards beautiful women.

Lumier is a surprisingly lecherous character for a kids' movie. I guess that is probably a problematic stereotype of the French manifesting in children's media.

If you are worried about Lumier being lonely, Cogsworth is going to eventually show up in this set, so he will just have to be patient.

 Flask of distilled sunlight

Flask of distilled sunlight: Distilled sunlight is being pumped directly into the corporeal form of a vampiric bat god to keep it in a catatonic state so that blasphemous vampire researchers can use the god’s blood to make super soldiers. 

Sometimes I take an item card that is already published and alter it slightly to better fit my campaign. Drewly is a great time to share those slight changes without feeling like I am cheating on a weekly post.

The Minish Cap: The girl’s matchstick

 The girl’s matchstick

Flame Lantern: Link finds the flame lantern in the Temple of the Droplets after beating the big blue chu chu. The lantern casts a warm light in a short radius that illuminates the darkness, melts ice, and ignites flammable materials. 

The matchstick became a symbol for change in the city when a young matchstick seller was found dead on the street after a frigid night. The masses were always angry that the elites hoarded their wealth, but their anger became a fury after the story of the fallen matchstick girl spread. The fires of revolution have taken hold in the city, and no one what will become of the city when the smoke finally clears.

The Matchstick Girl is one of the more depressing folk tales you can ever hear. It is made worse when you realize the story could be set today without much adjustment.

Four Swords Adventures: Light leech lamp

 Light leech lamp

 

 

 

Lamp: Lamps are pedestal items in Four Swords Adventures which means they can be used by any Link that picks them up for the duration of the stage they are found on. Lamps shed light, illuminating darkness, and can be swung to start fires and light torches.

This simple-looking lantern burns no oil. Instead, it slowly drinks up light and shadow when not in use. Opening the lens, the lantern sheds the stored light to see in the dark or the stored shadow for some controlled discretion.

Four Swords Adventures: Tools of the fire dancer

Tools of the Fire Dancer

Fire Rod: Another pedestal item from Four Swords Adventures, this rod allows a Link to shoot flames. They can throw a ball of flame or make a continuous gout of flame. These flames can be used to light braziers, damage enemies, and solve puzzles. Like most, maybe all, pedestal items in Four Swords Adventure, the fire rod can be upgraded to level 2 by presenting it to a Great Fairy.

Flame dancers wow audiences with their daring performances of skill and endurance. These blazing staves and batons magically burn forever. Where most everflames burn cold these burn hotter than most flames to ensure the dancer’s feats are not diminished.

Shell Boats: My wife’s family has a tradition where each person makes a boat out of a walnut shell and a candle. You light all the boats at the same time and the person with the last boat floating gets a wish.

Holidays: Break a leg this Christmas.

Leg Lamp: Every person harbors safe wishes that they can share and others will support, and darker secret wishes they keep hidden from the world. This is one of those hidden secret wishes, but someone was fool enough to let it out into the world. Brace yourself for the havoc this wish will wreak on the unsuspecting and unprepared.

The infamous leg lamp from A Christmas Story. This is one of my mother’s favorite Christmas movies and I can still remember her howling with laughter when the leg lamp gets unboxed.

My household celebrates Christmas. Merry Christmas if yours does too.

A tarnished brass lamp.

Wishing Lamp: Contained in this simple brass lamp is a genie of great and terrible power. Rub the lamp to summon out the genie and receive your three wishes. But beware, genies are often capricious and will try to take as much as they give.

Lighting Rod: It is a rod that illuminates the area when activated and can be thrown to create a bright and loud explosion that dazzles the unprepared.

I drew this to represent a Lightning Javelin in my game but thought the lighting rod pun was a better interpretation of the art.

Wind Waker: An ampule of glowing essence.

 An ampule of glowing essence.

Forest Firefly: These majestic fireflies glow in seven different colors and can only be found in the Forest Haven. This isolated forest is the last vestige of the once mighty forests that covered Hyrule before being drowned under the floods that birthed the Great Sea. In the original release, Link must capture a firefly and give it to Lenzo so that he can upgrade Link’s Pictobox into the Deluxe Pictobox capable of taking color photographs. In the HD rerelease, Link is given the Deluxe Pictobox from the start, so Lenzo doesn’t need a firefly for his research.

Such an ampule of distilled firefly essence requires the lives of millions of fireflies to create. The result of such an insecticide massacre is a fluid that makes any who drink it glow for a few hours. It is also an invaluable reagent in spells conjuring or controlling lights.

If you don’t know what an Ampule is, it is a type of container for medicines and reactive liquids. The ampule is sealed by melting the glass tip, which means the neck must be snapped off to open them.

Ashbringer: The holy avenger wielded by Highlord Morgaine in the Silver Hand’s crusade against the forces of the undead. Its radiant power smites the undead, leaving only ash.

Light Arrows: The light arrows are the final item Link obtains in his adventures, earning them in Gannon’s Tower by defeating an illusion of Phantom Gannon. The light arrows are a goddess-granted superweapon that can slay any normal enemy in a single shot and are the only thing that can weaken Gannon enough to be slain. Light arrows are vital in defeating Gannon. First Link uses them to defeat Gannon in various forms, and then Zelda takes up the bow and light arrows to work together with Link so that his evil can be sealed away.

Radiant arms were crafted in secret for the soldiers who knew the true enemy was not the English, but the vampiric shadow sovereign pulling the strings. The vampiric government sought to piggyback on the brutal colonialist expansions to spread their influence around the world. Armed with weapons imbued with the light of day, a small group of fighters seek to hold back the tide of darkness.

Vampire colonists were done well in Magic the Gathering’s Ixalan expansions. While I do not play MtG at all these days, I do try to keep up with the lore.

Apropos of colonialist expansions, I wonder what a version of Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Steel would be like if magic existed or if the gods were active interventionists? Guns, Germs, Steel, and Sorcery. Gods, Guns, Germs, and Steel.

Engine Grease: Tick Tock, the Horon Village clockmaker, is in desperate need of a beautiful bird to complete his most recent clock. The magnificent bird that Syrup gave Link for the mushroom is just the piece Tick Tock has been searching for to finish his magnum opus. In exchange for the masterfully crafted bird, he gives Link some engine grease. To be fair, he probably only uses the highest quality lubricants, but the trade still feels a bit one-sided.

The grimy antique brass lamp is a fully functional lamp. Unfortunately, no amount of cleaning will ever restore its original luster. Also, no amount of rubbing will release a djinni to grant you three wishes.

Holiday: Lantern for the Lunar New Year...a week late.

Lantern: Based on my very surface-level research, the iconic red paper lanterns displayed during Lunar New Year celebrations in China represent the bright hopeful wishes for the new year while channeling the luck and wealth attracting properties of the color red.

I know that Lunar New Year was last Friday, February 12, 2021, but I had already written up my Mjolnir post for the 200th post on my blog and didn’t want to have to make any adjustments for my Valentine’s Day bow and arrow being the 200th post.

I’m often asked for what stats I give these items in my games. Usually, I use the cards to represent some item that already exists in the game’s rules, but I could see this lantern magically floating in a slow orbit around its owner. The lantern can be ignited or extinguished by speaking a code word. When the lantern is lit, the owner and all allies within the radius of the light can choose to reroll one d20 roll of their choice before the results are confirmed, taking the second result regardless of the result. A single individual can only take advantage of this reroll once per day.

Ocarina of Time: Link is given the Ocarina of Time by Zelda as he is leaving Hyrule in the prologue of Majora’s Mask. She also teaches him the Song of Time, warning him to play it in times of need. Link's ability to travel in time by playing the Song of Time is the only thing that allows the entire story of Majora’s Mask to take place. Without it, Skullkid would have succeeded in their apocalyptic plan of pulling the moon down from the sky. For continuity purposes, Majora's Mask takes place in the child Link timeline after he is successful in defeating Ganondorf.

Legends tell of a vast store of ancient arcano-technology held in a hidden vault behind a sealed gate that can only be opened after the fabled Horn of Doom is blown. A thousand years of peace were shattered when foolish adventurers sounded the ancient horn without knowing it would warn all the world that the vault would soon open. After the warning, the great powers of the world quickly mobilized their vast forces to ensure they would be the first to find and secure the vault.
