Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian: When the Guardian betrayed the world, their staff was sundered. The head snapped off, the base pried off, and the stave shattered into splinters. The staff’s power is too great to stay broken, if you can gather all of these pieces, we just may be able to restore the staff to its former glory.

Vanilla WoW’s commitment to grinding 40 man raids is legendary. Even more so was the players’ commitment to doing all that grinding for this magic stick.

Nothing hits quite like doing a fetch quest and then having a follow up mission go back to the same place for something vaguely related that you probably could have gotten at the same time as your first quest.

Carrot on a stick: Get your mount moving that sweet 3% faster with your very first trinket, a carrot on a stick. All you need to do is journey into the desert, kill a oasis kaiju, and return with one of its scales to be rewarded with this exotic trinket.

Back in my day you had to walk to different zones in World of Warcraft and that 3% speed boost eventually added up to save you quite a bit of time.

Axes for Orctober!

 Axes for Orctober!

Rexxar’s Axe: Rexxar is a hero of the Horde and was instrumental in the founding of Orgrimmar on Kalimdor. As he is Mok’Nathal, he has Ogre and Orc heritage, meaning he can wield two of these heavy-looking axes with ease.

Horde Grunt’s Axe: The footsoldiers of the Horde are outfitted with this simple, large axe that can be used one-handed with a shield or two-handed to take advantage of the incredible strength of even the lowliest Orc warrior.

Rexxar is a direct rip-off of Darkwolf from Fire and Ice. Watching Fire and Ice long after playing the Orc single-player campaign in Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne was my personal moment of finding out Blizzard just remixes existing properties without really changing them all that much. Most people probably realized that when they noticed a lot of items in WarCraft 3 were just direct superhero references from comics. That realization really helped me with my imposter syndrome as a GM when I couldn’t come up with a perfectly unique story and instead wanted to copy or remix.

Orctober is mostly a miniatures wargaming meme or challenge, but here is my contribution to the month of the Orc.

Swordtember: Orc Raider siege falchion

 Orc Raider siege falchion

Siege Falchion: These massive, thick-bladed swords are an ungainly combination of a lance, an axe, and a falchion. Orc worg riders can skewer slow foes with the point of the blade in a charge, or they can use the edge-shaped blade to make short work of wooden structures favored by the exploratory armies invading the Orc steppe.

Finding out Orc raiders did siege damage in Warcraft 3 was fairly disappointing. You’d think a blade longer than a human would make quick work of a footman, but the blade moves too slowly, apparently. Those raiders were great for just wrecking an enemy's expansion base.

Drewly: Spell Breaker’s Tower Shield

 Spell Breaker’s Tower Shield

Spell Breaker’s Tower Shield: These massive shields are forged by expert smiths and further enchanted by mages so they might ward off both mundane and magical attacks with ease. Such shields are essential when fighting enemy mages who can hurl a boulder with the toss of a hand or fling a fireball with a thought.

Drewly 27th brings an end to Warcraft universe items. These aren’t the only Warcraft items I have drawn, I’m particularly fond of the Warglaives of Azzinoth I did a while back, but we have more fan art of major fantasy IP’s to get to.

 Meeting Stone

Summoning Stone: Placed about the world near places of high adventure, these stones allow groups to reach out across vast distances and summon a close friend or fellow adventurer.

On the 26th of Drewly, I’d like to imagine an arcane logistics guild that hears about important locations where adventurers are likely to flock and set up a summoning stone to facilitate travel, all for a nominal fee of course.

Drewly: Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros

 Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros

Sulfuras: This mighty flaming warhammer is the personal weapon of the Elemental Lord of Flame. With the mighty warhammer in hand, the Firelord sought to take over the mortal plane, expanding their empire and upending the delicate balance of the elemental powers once and for all.

Drewly 25th has another vanilla WoW staple legendary. This hammer was a slough to get, not in the least bit because the materials needed to craft it were dropped in a 40-person raid. The fact that there was ever a time when 40 people could get on the same schedule and coordinate themselves to accomplish something in a video game stretches believability.

Drewly: Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker.

 Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker.

Thunderfury: The essence of a slain elemental prince of air was forged into this blade. The power of the blade is at its greatest when wielded against the forces of the offending Firelords that slew the prince.

Drewly 24th brings with it a classic from Vanilla WoW that I only know about because of the people who took o.g. WoW really seriously still liked to show the thing off even after there were far better weapons to be found. This was in the days before transmogrification and your gear just looked like the model it was given.

Drewly: Verdant Spheres of House Sunstrider

 Verdant Spheres of House Sunstrider

Verdant Spheres: These three moon crystal shards were once a shield to defend the lands and lives of the elves. When that shield failed, the crystals were taken up and used as a devastating weapon against the enemies of the elves and any who got in between the elves and their bloody vengeance.

Drewly 23rd brings us the orbs that belonged to Kael’Thas Sunstrider, vengeance vengeance-obsessed blood elf from World of Warcraft. This whole week is items from the Warcraft universe that struck my fancy for one reason or another.

Drewly: The Dragonspine Trophy

 The Dragonspine Trophy

Dragonspine Trophy: The giant known as the Dragon Slayer takes gruesome trophies. Slung about their beck is the spine of a dragon, ritualistically torn from its corpse so that the dragon’s speed might enhance the Dragon Slayer’s already formidable attacks.

Drewly 22nd brings with it an item I, like most people, never actually owned. DST was a very nice trinket during the time of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade’s raids. I can’t count the number of times I led the 25-person raid into Gruul’s Lair hoping to even see this trinket drop.
