The Minish Cap: Possibly arcane beans

 Possibly arcane beans

Spare Key: The owner of Lon Lon ranch lost his key to the front door, but he of course has a spare key for just this situation. Unfortunately, they keep the spare key in the locked house and therefore cannot get their key to get into the house. Link must shrink down to Minish size and then enter the ranch house and rescue the ill-placed spare key. Returning the key to the ranch owner secures Link a passage to lake Hylia and opens up milk sales in the city.

We got beans for sale! Big barrel of beans bursting with benefits! Some of these beans are magic, some of these beans are drought-resistant, some of these beans are heirloom quality. Come, trade for a scoop of beans, and find out what fate has in store for you.

----------

Free idea for a ridiculous vendor: A magic bean peddler that is unenthusiastically part of a magic beans multi-level marketing scheme. They try to sell you magic beans, but forgot what each of the magic beans do. After a few purchases, if they ever make a sale, they are visibly dominated by the spirit of the bean-selling scheme and make a hollow and lifeless plea for you to join their up-and-coming opportunity in selling beans.

This is actually the sort of stuff that makes it into my games. Which is why I need an item card to represent non-magical beans, just in case my party has bad luck.

The Minish Cap: A small needle with a big story.

A small needle with a big story.

Picori Blade: The blade that seals the bound chest was given to a legendary hero of men by the Picori in ages past. It was used to banish a great evil and seal its monsters and demons into the bound chest, ushering in an age of peace. The blade remained in the bound chest until Vaati destroyed it to open the bound chest in his search for ultimate power. Link only ever sees the intact Picori blade during his adventures in the Minish Cap.

Paw Thorn is the name given to this needle, famously wielded by the equally brave and foolish Marai Spicerack. The Spicerack family had always been menaced by Buterscotch, the mouser and resident cat of the house. Instead of stealth and subtlety, as is the way of the Borrower, Marai chose speed and pain, undertaking a campaign of terror that eventually saw Butterscotch bring dead mice to the spicerack as an offering of surrender.

----------

The Picori are a great reminder that your fantasy world can have a nearly invisible race of Borrower-inspired little folk that can be dropped in whenever you need them to be.

Need some seeds stolen out of a pouch? The little folk.

Need an object to have moved since you put it down? The little folk.

Need an entire temple complex to be hidden neatly within a local fountain? The little folk.

Take this as your sign to add Borrowers or Picori or Little Folk or whatever to your world today.

The Minish Cap: The blade that was shattered is forged anew.

The blade that was broken is forged anew.

Broken Picori Blade: The Picori Blade sealed Vaati within the bound chest, but it was broken when Vaati escaped his imprisonment. Link is given the broken blade and the task of restoring its former power by King Daltus. Link my gather the elemental essences to first reforge the broken blade into the White Sword and eventually the Four Sword.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

----------

It's not the best Narsil and Andúril fan art, but it is mine.

It is impossible to state how much of an impact The Lord of the Rings films had on my life. I was 10, I liked all sorts of kid stuff, and then this serious fantasy epic appeared on the big screen, and something clicked. After that, I was hooked on fantasy. I was a reluctant reader, but I’d read fantasy. I played with fantasy toys. I went searching for fantasy video games, and I found Morrowind and WarCraft 3, and the rest is history.

The Minish Cap: The sword of a warlord

 The sword of a warlord

Smith’s Sword: This sword was forged to be the prize of the sword-fighting competition held during the Picori festival, which was ultimately interrupted by Vaati’s evil schemes. Link is given the sword by his grandfather, the greatest Hylian smith, and tasked to take it to the King. We covered the Smith’s sword as a functional item at the start of this set. This represents the smith’s sword as a quest item.

After the empire abandoned the Isles, warlords began to carve the land into small feuding fiefdoms. A particularly well-provisioned warlord, known for carrying the sword of an imperial governor, established a small but bountiful fief during the chaotic post-imperial years. It was from that strong core that the young warlord would steadily expand their sphere of influence until they controlled enough of the Isles to be considered its first true king.

----------

King Arthur was almost assuredly not a real person in the way we think of him. While the Arthur we all imagine is probably a myth, there may have been a charismatic and influential leader in Britain in the post-Roman period who was known for his amazing sword and the forging of a fledgling British kingdom.

Maybe that leader used an awe-inspiring Roman Spatha that was cast using a stone mold and polished to a mirror sheen. It might take the magic out of the story a little bit, but I personally love seeing the mundane, plausible side of mythic tales. It makes the mythic tales all that much more grand.

The Minish Cap: Flying Carpet

 Flying Carpet

Wind Element: The fourth and final elemental essence Link recovers in the Minish Cap. The wind element is found in the Palace of the Winds, which is literally in the clouds. Returning to the elemental sanctuary, Link can infuse the fourth element into the white sword and create the Four Sword of Legend. This unlocks the blade’s full potential, allowing Link to split into four copies and containing the power to seal great evil.

This carpet was woven as a gift for a proud sorcerer, but was spurnned as too mundane. The carpet languished in the sorcerer’s dungeons until a peasant, intended to be a sacrifice to a greater genie, wished for freedom to a lesser genie also imprisoned by the sorcerer. The lesser genie used the wish to grant the carpet intelligence and flight so it could spirit the peasant and genie far away from the dungeons of the vile sorcerer.

----------

In the original tellings of the story of Aladdin, Aladdin lives in ancient China and meets two different genies. There is the weaker genie of the ring and the greater genie of the lamp.

The Minish Cap: Haunted Candelabra

 Haunted Candelabra

Fire Element: Atop Mount Crenel, deep in the Cave of Flames, the Fire Element is guarded by a turtle dragon that Link must defeat. After defeating the beast, Link can take the Earth and Fire elements to the Elemental Sanctuary and begin the reforging of the Picori blade. With two elements, the newly dubbed white sword has the power to split Link into two copies.

This candelabra was recovered from a supposedly haunted manor. According to local gossip, the lord of the manor was cursed, and so were all of his unfortunate servants. The candelabra is certainly a curio, as its candles never burn lower, and it has a habit of tipping towards beautiful women.

----------

Lumier is a surprisingly lecherous character for a kids' movie. I guess that is probably a problematic stereotype of the French manifesting in children's media.

If you are worried about Lumier being lonely, Cogsworth is going to eventually show up in this set, so he will just have to be patient.

The Minish Cap: A Seeing Stone

 A Seeing Stone

Earth Element: To reforge the Picori blade and revive its power to seal away evil, Link must gather the four elemental essences. The Earth Element is guarded by the Big Green Chuchu in Minish Cap’s first dungeon, Deepwood Shrine. Link must wait until he has earned two of the four elements before he can begin the reforging process.

In a crazed display of foolishness, a spiderlike fae tossed this seeing stone in her fire, thinking it destroyed. A fire far greater than a witch’s hearth is needed to shatter such a potent artifact of natural power. The brave young girl escaped The Beldam’s web, but should another young victim find themself in the sinister fae’s domain, a potent artifact awaits them in the hearth’s cold ashes.

It was deeply disheartening to hear of the sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman. It sucks that there is always this sword of Damocles hanging above important and influential male figures.

Today in drewly we are going to focus in on how great Laika’s films are. Go watch some great stop-motion films and support my favorite movie medium.

The Minish Cap: Frog Legs

 Frog Legs

Flippers: The flippers allow Link to swim in the many waterways of Hyrule. He can find them beneath the Royal Hyrule Library, but only after he finds and returns all the library’s missing books.

A hedge witch charm for safe traveling through swamps, bogs, and marshes starts with catching the third frog heard on the third day of the third week after a new moon. In the light of the waxing moon, anoint the frog with blood taken from your ankle, your knee, and your hip, and then eat all of the frog but its legs. Hang the legs from a braid of your hair, and you should have no trouble when passing through even the most fearsome swamps.

----------

I feel like the secret to a good witch’s charm is making it both prohibitively complex while also being gross.

Drewly today is my take on the flippers from The Minish Cap. I have drawn flippers before, so I went a bit more abstract with the concept of swimming tools. I am currently posting the drawings based on items from The Minish Cap. I’ve got complete sets for the first 11 Zelda games and a bunch of other item sets already posted here. https://thespeakingsquid.blogspot.com/search/label/Collected

The Minish Cap: Rings of Power

 Rings of Power

Power Bracelets: Wearing these bracelets gives Link the strength of a giant while shrunk down to Minish size. Practically, that means Link has his normal-sized strength while shrunk down to Minish proportions. Link must venture into the Minish sanctuary hidden inside the Hyrule Town Fountain to obtain these bracelets.

This matched pair of gold rings was cast by the last great elven smith during the waning of Elvendom. They were made as a proof of concept for the smith’s true masterwork, the rings that would shake the world to its foundation. While they were made as a stepping stone and given no names, the two amplify their wearers’ innate qualities, making heroes more heroic and villains more villainous.

----------

This is me shoe-horning more Rings of Power into Tolkien’s Middle-earth. It always bothered me that Tolkien didn’t use the first five prime numbers for his Rings of Power sets, so here I am adding the 2 and just imagining there are five dwarven lords and seven kings of men.

Drewly today is my normal weekly item card post, where I post drawings inspired by all the items in all the Zelda games. I am currently posting the items from The Minish Cap. The Minish Cap: An ice pick

An ice pick

Grip Ring: Link must get this ring to reach the top of Mount Crenel. Luckily, there is a business scrub who just so happens to sell this ring about halfway up the mountain. Conveniently, just about where Link’s natural climbing abilities reach their limit. Once Link has purchased the ring, he can climb rocky walls, allowing him to reach the top of the mountain and continue his quest.

This is the ice pick that started it all for the world’s newest summiter of the great peak. The first time they hung from an ice pick stuck in a frozen waterfall, they knew they would be climbing mountains until the day they died. Unfortunately, their jealous climbing partner wanted to be the first person to summit the great peak with only simple tools, and this ice pick in their hands seems like they intend for the world to believe you died in a terrible accident before you could make it to the top.

----------

The grip ring is all about climbing previously impassible mountains, and I didn’t feel like drawing another ring, so that is how you get an icepick for a simple ring.

The Minish Cap: The White Rabbit’s Pocket Watch

 The White Rabbit’s Pocket Watch

Carlov Medal: This medal signifies Link’s commitment to collecting the many figurines of The Minish Cap. If Link can gather enough mysterious shells to buy all 136 figurines, he is given this medal by the creator of the figurines. Other than showing an unwavering commitment to collecting, the medal gives Link access to a house with a piece of heart and a phonograph.

Pocket watches are supposed to keep you from being late, but the white rabbit that owns this watch only ever seems to check it once he is already running behind. The rabbit might be a bit spacey or perhaps they are too ambitious in their scheduling, but what if the watch itself is made to trick the rabbit into thinking they are always late. Wonderland is a confusing and often menacing place, so it would surprise only the most naive to find that the White Rabbit’s pocket watch was given as a prank.

The Minish Cap: Sea Witch’s Charm

 Sea Witch’s Charm

Mysterious Shell: These shells can be found all over Hyrule in every sort of place Link can find items. Link can exchange mysterious shells to purchase various figurines depicting characters, monsters, and bosses from Link’s adventures in The Minish Cap.

Rumors speak of a witch who lives beneath the sea who can grant any wish, for a price. Petitioners of her great power should beware, as the cost of her gifts is always something dear, and the wish always comes with some sort of vicious technicality where the witch can win their very soul. It is said she keeps the souls of her poor, unfortunate victims in the golden shell she wears about her neck, its ever-growing contents empowering and emboldening the witch.

----------

I haven’t drawn an item card for each figurine Link can find in the Minish Cap. If I ever reach the point where I have finished drawing all the items in every Zelda game, I may come back and draw the figurines. With the amount of items in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, as well as the number of echoes in Echoes of Wisdom, I don’t think I will reach that point any time soon.

The Minish Cap: The Dragon’s Scroll

 The Dragon’s Scroll

Tiger Scrolls: The eight tiger scrolls record the new fighting moves taught to Link by the Blade Brothers. After Link has learned the move from a Blade Brother, he receives the scroll to represent his learning and allow him to review what special moves he has mastered.

This scroll is said to contain the secrets to limitless power. It was inked by a temple master who transcended their mortal form upon completing the scroll. The scroll was left with the cryptic instruction to only be given to the dragon warrior, a presumed mythic figure of a long-ignored prophecy.

The Minish Cap: The Golden Touch

 The Golden Touch

Tingle Trophy: If Link can complete 100 kinstone fusions throughout his adventures, the man fairy Tingle will give Link a golden trophy to celebrate his commitment to friendship and kinstones.

When a greedy king earned a boon from the gods, they wished that anything they touched would turn to gold. The king eventually learned a bitter lesson when they turned their favored child into a golden statue. The king’s closest advisors learned an even more important lesson when they learned the king’s severed hand still carries the gilded touch, even after the death of the king and the amputation of his hand.

The Minish Cap: Greedy Catfish

Greedy Catfish

Kinstone Bag: This sack stores all the kinstones Link collects during his adventures, swelling to near bursting by the end. Link is given the bag near the start of his adventure after conquering the dangers of the Deepwood Shrine.

This massive catfish is responsible for the disappearance of at least three gold rings. The first, it ate off the finger of an unlucky fisher, and the second and third were lost when the same foolish fisher baited their hook with rings only to lose the lures to the wily fish.  There is now an informal bounty on this big fish, with the reward being all the gold the greedy fish has eaten.

Losing a ring in the water only to eat the fish with your missing ring still inside is fairy tale destiny at its finest.

The Minish Cap: Box of Troubles

 Box of Troubles

Empty Bottle: These bottles hold potions, water, critters, and all other sorts of odds and ends. Link can find up to four empty bottles in Minish Cap. He will need to fuse kinstones, purchase, and trade for the bottles.

This box was crafted by the gods to hold back all the ills of mortal life. As long as the box remained sealed, the world would remain peaceful. Unfortunately, a curious mortal couldn’t help themselves and they peeked into the box, releasing all the maladies it contained.
