Drewly: Pearl of the Sirens

 Pearl of the Sirens

Pearl of the Sirens: Fashioned by a sea seductress who didn’t want to immediately drown and devour their victims. This necklace allows drylanders to survive beneath the water for as long as the seductress wishes.

We have been going strong with drewly for three entire weeks!

For a random one-off item drawing for my homebrew Pathfinder game, I am very happy with how this turned out.

The Minish Cap: Frog Legs

 Frog Legs

Flippers: The flippers allow Link to swim in the many waterways of Hyrule. He can find them beneath the Royal Hyrule Library, but only after he finds and returns all the library’s missing books.

A hedge witch charm for safe traveling through swamps, bogs, and marshes starts with catching the third frog heard on the third day of the third week after a new moon. In the light of the waxing moon, anoint the frog with blood taken from your ankle, your knee, and your hip, and then eat all of the frog but its legs. Hang the legs from a braid of your hair, and you should have no trouble when passing through even the most fearsome swamps.

----------

I feel like the secret to a good witch’s charm is making it both prohibitively complex while also being gross.

Drewly today is my take on the flippers from The Minish Cap. I have drawn flippers before, so I went a bit more abstract with the concept of swimming tools. I am currently posting the drawings based on items from The Minish Cap. I’ve got complete sets for the first 11 Zelda games and a bunch of other item sets already posted here. https://thespeakingsquid.blogspot.com/search/label/Collected

Wind Waker: An emergency life preserver.

Wind Waker: An emergency life preserver.

Heart Container: One of these heart containers increases Link’s life total by one complete heart. Link can only earn complete heart containers by defeating the bosses at the end of each of Wind Waker’s dungeons.

You know in they are a terrible person and the world would be a safer place without them in it. You also know that everyone has the capability of change and maybe this experience could change them. You are the only one who saw them fall in, do you throw them a lifesaver or do you just walk away?

----------

Can you imagine only getting the heart containers from bosses? I’d never play that way, but I guess you could just skip all the exploring and looking for pieces of hearts and other loot, relying only on dungeon items, main quest upgrades, and boss heart containers. I guess that’s speed running, but that is not the way I play Zelda games.

That is the final item card from the Wind Waker set. Next week we will come back with the collected card set. After that, we will be exploring the items from Four Swords Adventures. That is a relatively short list, at least compared to Wind Waker.

Wind Waker: An emergency life jacket.

Wind Waker: An emergency life jacket.

Piece of Heart: Pieces of Heart are often given as a reward for solving a puzzle or finding some hidden zone. Collecting four pieces of heart allows Link to increase his total hearts available by one. Wind Waker is kind enough to have many different charts and hints pointing Link to most of the locations of the 44 total pieces of heart hidden throughout the Great Sea.

In the event of an emergency, a life jacket can be the difference between drowning or staying afloat. Wearing a life jacket effectively staves off drowning, but it isn’t going to do anything to keep you from freezing to death in the arctic waters that stretch to the horizon in all directions. Damn that iceberg, damn that fool of a captain, and damn that designer for claiming this damned ship unskinkable.

----------

Always wear your life jacket when boating. You never know when you will be knocked overboard and have to fight to stay afloat.

Not an artist: Four items from Oracle of Seasons that make you a monster.

Four items from Oracle of Seasons that make you a monster.

Zora Flippers: These flippers allow Link to swim in the many waterways of Holodrum. Link must complete the Master Diver’s trial to earn the right to use the flippers. The trial sounds simple enough, return the Master’s Plaque, but that ignores the fact that the plaque is atop a waterfall that Link can only ascend with the help of Dimitri the swimming dodongo. With Dimitri’s help, Link can earn the flippers, and the whole wet world of water is opened to him.

These gloves appear to be silly costume details when not worn. After they are donned, they become stuck on the wearer, transforming the hands into monstrous claws. If the gloves are not somehow removed, they will eventually transform the wearer into a terrifying aquatic monster.

Not an artist: Five items from Oracle of Seasons that are tools of the apocalypse

Five items from Oracle of Seasons that are tools of the apocalypse

Magnetic Glove: Found in the Unicorn’s Cave, the magnetic gloves allow Link to push and pull metallic objects based on their weight and polarity. Every time Link activates the gloves, they switch polarity from positive to negative which means the object, or Link if the object is heavy enough, is either repulsed or attracted to the glove. I have used a similar mechanic in my games, but I just gave the glove the ability to manifest a limited form of telekinesis that only works on magnetic metals.

This mechanical fist is a poor replica of the hand of an immortal watcher. With this approximation of the divine, gifted mortals might focus their limited abilities enough to momentarily pierce the veil separating the mortal world from other realms. The wearer might lure a lesser being from the other realms into our world, but even a lesser spirit has the power to unleash untold destruction in the mundane sphere.

Five items from Oracle of Ages found in the sunken district of New Seattle.

Zora’s Flippers: These flippers were created by the great inventor Cheval who created items that help the landlocked venture away from the shore and out into the watery places of the world. Link can find these flippers within Cheval’s tomb in the Yoll Graveyard. Before his death, Cheval designed and built a cavernous tomb with obstacles and puzzles to ensure that only one who is worthy of his gifts could obtain them. The flippers allow Link to swim in the waters of Labrynna and dive briefly to avoid attacks, circumvent obstacles,  and solve puzzles.

The 2050s are remembered as the decade when the polar ice caps melted entirely away and the coasts were flooded under rapidly rising sea levels. They are also remembered for the emergence of urban diving. Divers flocked to the newly sunken city districts, some as explorers and adventurers, while others came as scavengers and thieves looking to loot the places abandoned during the floods.

Fives masks from Majora’s Mask you could find in an explorer’s collection.

Kafei’s Mask: This mask is given to Link upon accepting the quest to find her missing son Kafei. This mask was hand carved in the image of the missing boy. If Link talks to citizens of Clock Town with the mask on they comment on Kafei’s disappearance and provide leads for Link to track down.

Duels may be terribly out of fashion these days but they are still technically legal as long as the correct protocols are followed. It was at one of those such duels where the master of the house acquired the wig of a barrister who was made to choose between their dignity and their life. As these specific wigs are only given to lawyers upon obtaining their license this is a novel keepsake.

Six items from Ocarina of Time you would find at a fantasy customs checkpoint.

Silver Scale: Link has the innate ability to swim and dive in Ocarina of Time. This is pretty nice since, in other games, he has had to get some magical help to simply swim. The silver scale improves his natural abilities. most importantly allowing access to Jabu-Jabu’s belly

Fig Harbor is known as the gateway to the west in the thousand islands east of the Neck. With piracy being a socially acceptable career east of the neck, most people are surprised to learn of customs agents operating in such seemingly lawless lands. Fig Harbor customs agents all wear a silver scale in a glass bauble. They are only concerned with the intercepting the few truly forbidden cargos such as slaves or souls.

Six items from Ocarina of Time made by Turtle Shell Ablatives, a ProtecCo company.

Deku Shield: I think the Deku Shield is the game’s most thematically interesting shield as it is made from the bark of the Great Deku Tree and inscribed with the Kokiri symbol. Those two facts really ground the shield in the lore of the world. It's only usable by child Link and is extremely vulnerable to flame so it is often relegated to being a basic or starter shield rather than a memorable item.
I remember really liking how this came out when I drew it but looking at it now I'm not impressed. I guess that is the march of progress.

For the holy warrior more concerned with venerating the gods of nature then personal protection there is the Ironwood Buckler. Bark harvested from sanctified ironwood trees is inscribed with the symbol of your choice and then treated with resins and holy oils to keep it as hard as iron. Don't let prohibitions against metal armor keep you from safely spreading the will of the gods to even the most hostile of audiences.

I'm not an artist: Five items from Link's Awakening found in a detective story.

Five items from Link’s Awakening a pulp investigator would have.

Flippers: Link uses these to dive below the surface of water.

Every private investigator knows they will eventually be called to sneak into some abandoned building through the inevitably flooded basement. With a pair of trusty flippers and a lung full of air, there is no limit to the trouble an investigator can get themselves into.

I'm not an artist: Five super items from A Link to the Past

Five items from A Link to the Past. Each with an adventure seed from the super powered city of New Metropia.

Blue Mail: The blue mail offers Link increased damage reduction and a cool new pallet swapped sprite. The armor is found in an ice themed dungeon and it really only connects with the dungeon’s theme via the color blue. The symbol on the chest is based on various images from color theory so I’m thinking about colorful as a concept when I see this breastplate.

Rainbow Defender became the first openly homosexual crime fighter in New Metropia almost seventy years ago. The citizens of New Metropia were not always accepting of Rainbow Defender, but they have always defended the rights and liberties of each and every person. Always appearing in their distinctive rainbow colored armor, they are all but invulnerable to harm. Some theorize that the armor has actually been passed down to a new generation allowing the original Defender to retire.

The Radiant Raiment was bestowed to a particularly devout paladin in service of the Searing Light. This crusader of the light was last seen traveling towards Sengiriztan, a land avoided by all but the bravest or most foolish due to its fearsome reputation for being secretly ruled by a vampiric oligarchy.
