Not an artist: Four instruments from Oracle of Seasons that summon spirits.

Four instruments from Oracle of Seasons that summon spirits.

Strange Flute: The strange flute in Oracle of Seasons functions the same as it does in Oracle of Ages. At first, it does nothing, but it will eventually gain the power to summon Link’s animal companion, after he gains an animal companion of course. How Link obtains the flute determines which of the animal companions he will eventually bond with on his adventure through Holodrum. All strange flutes become available to find after Link explores through the Snake’s Remains dungeon.

Music can lure all sorts of different spirits to interfere with mortal affairs. A particularly annoying and unloved trickster spirit can be summoned to torment others by playing a special tune on the slide flute under a full moon. The spirit will run rampant through a community visiting vile pranks on all but the summoner until sent away by playing the same tune on the summoning flute.

Moosh’s Flute: A strange flute becomes available to buy in the Horon Village Shop after Link conquers the Snakes Remains. If Link purchases this flute, he will eventually meet Moosh, the flying panda bear, while they are being attacked. Saving Moosh from the enemies endears Link to Moosh, cementing their bond and changing the strange flute into Moosh’s flute. After the change, playing the flute summons Moosh to Link if Moosh can navigate to where Link is, mostly meaning he can’t summon Moosh in a dungeon or Subrosia.

To ensure the dearly departed find their way in the lands of the dead, mourners play the qeej to beseech spirit guides to appear. The guides show the new spirit the correct paths into the faraway lands so that they might rest with their ancestors who made the journey before them. Those who are not ushered into the faraway lands by a guide risk becoming lost and wandering back into the mortal world as a ghost.

Dimitri’s Flute: At the same time the flute appears in the shop, a flute becomes available as one of the rewards for excellence in the Subrosian Dance Hall. If Link wins this flute, he will eventually meet Dimitri, the friendly dodongo, being extorted by moblins. By helping Dimitri out of this bind, Link earns a loyal friend and his flute changes to Dimitri’s flute. Now playing the flute summons Dimitri to Link.

The water dragon is one of the great spirits that watch over the world and ensure all is in its proper order. It would be uncouth for a person to call for the personal attention of the water dragon unless in the most dire of circumstances. Even in the worst droughts, spirit callers only play the ceremonial songs to request aid from the lesser servants of the water dragon.

Ricky’s Flute: If you do not get either of the other two flutes that appear in Holodrum before meeting Ricky on your way through the Holodrum Plain, you will eventually bond with Ricky, the boxing kangaroo, after rescuing his gloves from the boxing champion. Once Link gives those gloves back, and since he doesn’t have any other connections, Ricky offers his flute as a sign of friendship. With the new flute, Link can summon Ricky to aid him in his adventures.

Wandering through the warm shady forests, you find a set of pipes delicately placed in the hollow of a tree. Carved around the hollow in the language of the fae reads “play if you are in need.” What it should say is, “play if you want to have a good time”, because playing these pipes spirits of celebration and excess with a train of hedonistic courtiers in tow.

Wow, this is the last regular post of 2020. I can’t believe that whole year was just one year and not a terrible decade. I am eagerly looking forward to putting 2020 in my rearview, even if there were some good moments, and I am trying to be hopeful about 2021.

I have a few more things planned to pop up on here before the end of the year, so watch out for that.

Have an excellent new year, and be excellent to everyone.
