I'm not an artist: The last five items from Ocarina of Time

The last five items from Ocarina of Time an ambitious conjurer would use.

Shard of Agony: The Shard of Agony notifies Link when he is near a hidden chest or an entrance to a secret grotto. Link is rewarded with the Shard by one of the cursed children of House Skulltula after releasing twenty souls from their cursed Golden Skulltula bodies. The Shard replaced the Stone of Agony in the rerelease of Ocarina of Time.

The Wand of Conjuration’s tip is crafted from a crystalline growth harvested from a titanic void leviathan that was old when the gods were young. Having fed on debris from a multitude of worlds, the coral-like diamonds growing out of the leviathan's hide are saturated with planar energies. By channeling their magic through the crystal shard, conjurers are able to summon entities vastly more powerful than their abilities and experience would normally allow. The last three owners of the wand have all died violent deaths after attempting particularly ambitious conjurations.

Stone of Agony: The Stone of Agony functions exactly like the Shard of Agony. It is a visual reference to the N64 rumble pack that added vibration into controllers. I was going to make a joke that the addition of vibration in controllers shook things up in the world of gaming, but then I thought about how natural a means of communication vibration is, so I really do think vibration changed the game. Cheers to the rumble pack.

The Rod of Binding is capped with a rough sphere of stone quarried out of primordial rock that cooled just after the fiery birth of the universe. At the base of the rod, there is a small reliquary forged from the chains of the twice bound god. With the rod held high, a person can bind powerful entities with unseen shackles. If the wielder can place a part of the bound creature in the reliquary, they are able to bend the creature to their will, dominating them as long as the rod holds a piece of their essence. Beings dominated in this way are entirely aware of their plight but helpless to resist.

From a GM perspective, I think it is problematic to provide players passive search items like the Shard/Stone of Agony or the medallion from the Witcher series. It is just one more thing that must be kept in mind. If I was going to put the Shard/Stone of Agony in a game, I would require that the user actively focuses through the item to gain the benefit of the divination. This is effectively how dowsing rods are supposed to be used.

Throughout all of history, there have only been a few instances in which the Wand of Conjuration and the Rod of Binding have been joined to form the Summoner’s Staff. Even though the two pieces were made to be part of a single whole, forcing them to join is nearly impossible. It is as if the two pieces have minds of their own, and the only thing they can agree on is a palpable dislike of the other. According to the surviving records, the wielder of the Summoner’s Staff can call forth some of the most powerful planar entities and compel them to obey commands. They can also summon up a shadowy clone of any creature whose essence is contained in the staff’s reliquary.

Golden Skulltula Token: Each of these tokens represents one soul freed from the Skulltula curse. When Link dispatches a golden skulltula, it drops one of these tokens. With the skulltulas hiding in strange places, sometimes half the puzzle is just getting the token. Link can return to the Skulltula House as he gathers tokens to receive gifts from the cursed inhabitants of the manor.

Devils may have a sinister reputation for dealing in mortal souls, promises, and favors, but many devils are more than happy simply dealing in coin. Such diabolical merchants are more than happy to receive currency from almost any mints, but they only pay out in coins cast in the Great Mint of Dis. Instantly recognizable with a mortal skull on one side and a diabolical skull on the other, some believe these coins carry infernal taint. Wild rumors speak of whole cities being swallowed up by hell when a critical mass of such coins overtake local currency in everyday transactions.

That’s it for Ocarina of Time! I will be posting the collected file for all of the items from Ocarina of Time so there will be no new drawings next week. After that, we will get started with the items in Majora’s Mask.

Use my work personally however you see fit, but please do not profit off my efforts without my consent.

Go out there and be excellent to everyone.
