I'm not an artist: Five masks from Majora’s Mask used as a disguise by a swashbuckling hero.

Five masks from Majora’s Mask used as a disguise by a swashbuckling hero.

Gibdo Mask: Link obtains this mummy mask by removing a mummification curse from an unfortunate supernatural researcher. When Link wears these wraps, other mummies think he is one of them and are willing to speak with him. Along with chatting with Gibdos, Link can also avoid being attacked by the undead when wearing this mask.

Valentine Desjardins is known as a courageous hero to some, an unscrupulous scoundrel to others, and is most truly a bit of both. Hot on the trail of a missing archeologist, Valentine Desjardins had to find a way inside of a guarded research laboratory. By disguising themself as a mummy inside a sarcophagus made by a gifted forger, the guards brought Desjardins into the most secure section of the facility where the missing archeologist, along with many priceless relics, were stored.

Garo’s Mask: Link wins this strange hood in a horse race with the Gorman brothers. If Link wears this mask in the Ikana Canyon he will be attacked by Garo, mysterious hooded ninjas. When Link defeats a Garo, they give him a hint that may help him on his quest. It also causes the undead to dance instead of attacking Link. This mask was updated in the 3D rerelease of Majora’s Mask to look like the Garo Master rather than a rank and file Garo.

A good billowy cloak with a deep cowl can get a sneaky person out of more situations than should be reasonable. Especially a reversible cloak that appears worn and cheap on one side and luxurious on the other. When even a cloak won’t keep inquisitive eyes at bay, one can always rely on the fear of plague to allow for masks in otherwise untenable situations.

Captain’s Hat: I know my version of this mask looks absolutely nothing like the one in the game, but I just felt like this was a more universally “captainy” hat. Link earns this mask by defeating the restless undead Captain Keeta. When Link wears this “hat” he is mistaken for Captain Keeta and, as such, can speak with the skeletal undead and is not attacked by zombies.

Valentine Desjardins is just as famous for their daring exploits as they are for their incredible vanity. Their iconic wide-brimmed hat sporting a single feather is only ever left at home when absolutely necessary. Harming or stealing this hat is an even more effective way to incite Desjardins’ anger than harming the innocent or stealing their coin.

I was trying to channel the Errol Flynn or Edmond Dantes full name swashbuckler with Valentine Desjardins. I was purposeful to avoid gendering our swashbuckler and I tried to pick a neutral name that could represent anyone.

No links this week. It is my first weekend after finishing my first semester of grad school and I may have reveled a bit harder than I intended to last night.

Please use my work personally however you see fit, but do not profit off my efforts without my consent.

Make a better world. Be excellent to everyone.
