I'm not an artist: The final five masks from Majora’s Mask that were worn by legendary individuals.

The final five masks from Majora’s Mask that were worn by legendary individuals.

Giant’s Mask: Donning this mask causes Link to grow to giant size. This mask is found in the Stone Tower Temple and can only be used in the Stone Tower Temple in fighting the dungeon’s insectoid boss. It totally makes sense from a balance perspective that you don’t want to allow your player unfettered access to being a giant, but it would have been cool if they did.

The story of the gladiator is known to many, but the original identity has been lost in the uncountable retelling. Nowadays it is not uncommon to hear that the legendary gladiator grew up just down the street from where the story is being told. The core facts of the story do not change. They were born into common people, conscripted as a foot soldier to die in their country’s wars, and they rose to a high rank through skill alone. Then they were betrayed, all they had worked for taken from them, and they were sent to die in the arena as entertainment for the very people who betrayed them. It was in the arena that the masses discovered the skill and tenacity of the one remembered only as the Gladiator.

Fierce Deity Mask: This mask is the completionist’s dream reward. Link can only obtain this mask if he has obtained every other mask in the game. When Link chases Majora’s Mask into the moon after summoning the four giants to halt the moon crashing into Termina, Link finds itself in a pastoral landscape with five children playing under a tree. The child wearing Majora’s Mask is actually sulking under the tree but the other four wearing the remains of the four bosses Link defeated to release the giants are playing. Each of those four children has a special dungeon to play through available as long as Link has some masks to give them. If Link has all the masks, he can play through all the dungeons and be rewarded with the Fierce Deity Mask. This mask transforms Link into a god of battle, making him an adult, giving him a helical sword, and allowing him to shoot sword beams at will.

Immortality is sought by many via means as distinct as each individual searcher. Some seek to employ ancient magics to unnaturally extend their lifespan; others seek perfect alignment of mind, body, and spirit to transcend mundane mortality; the Blade Dancer sought immortality through perfecting the use of the sword and passing the style down to worthy pupils. In this way, their presence will never leave the world. While officially denied by the School of the Dancing Blade, rumors say that the final act of the Blade Dancer was to pour all their skill into a battle mask, so that any who wore it could wield a blade with deadly expertise.

Sun Mask: This mask was made by Kafei as the mask he would wear in his wedding with Anju. It was stolen by a troublesome thief and Link must retrieve it from Sakon’s hideout. This is half of the Couple’s Mask and is part of the Kafei and Anju side quest.

The origins of the crown of blades are as unknown as the origins of the Lady who is and should always be its only wearer. The Lady is only concerned with the preservation of Her City and those who have earned Her attention usually suffer for it. While Her grand design for the City may not be known explicitly, She has been known to personally intervene when a calamitous threat arises.

Moon Mask: Anju made this mask to wear on her wedding and it is kept next to her wedding dress as Kaefi disappeared before the wedding. Link must combine this mask with the Sun Mask to create the Couple’s Mask in order to reunite the lovers.

Most laugh when they first see this strange, somewhat comical mask. Their laughter is often cut short by screaming when the Packmaster’s wolves descend with tearing claw and gnashing fang. It is unclear how the Packmaster captured some small mote of the full moon’s power, but they are relentlessly tracked by a coalition of avengers in service to moon deities that see the wisdom in putting aside their differences briefly to permanently deal with this upstart.

Majora’s Mask: An ancient artifact that contains an evil spirit, this mask was created by a long since forgotten tribe to assist them in dark rituals. They learned to fear the mask’s malign intelligence and sealed the mask away before disappearing entirely, leaving much of the information about the mask entirely forgotten. The Mask Salesman had it, through unknown means, and lost it in one of Skull Kid’s annoying pranks. When Skull Kid donned the mask, released the malicious spirit and started a process whereby Skull Kid would eventually be entirely taken over by the mask. It was the mask’s plan to destroy Termina with moon fall and it is the mask that Link must finally overcome inside the moon to save the world.

In a time before museums and crowds gathered to gawk and foreign novelties, there was a tribe desperate for survival. It was in that desperation they created a vessel to drink in the suffering of the people and use it to make them stronger. The mask was donned three times, once to defend the people from foreign invaders, once to lead the people in glorious conquest, and a third time in an ill-fated attempt to take dominion over the entire world. The people were wise enough to see that the mask was pushing them towards greater and greater depravity and so they chose to seal it deep in the earth where it should have stayed until the end of times. Foreign explorers chasing ancient legends of a long-vanished people ensured that the mask saw the sky again long before it was safe.

And we are done with the masks!

A couple of notes. Four out of five of these drawings were direct redraws of other IPs. I don’t think I did the Lady of Pain justice, but I am happy with Majora’s Mask. Which is good since it is the titular item of the game. Also, I usually try to keep my plot hooks short but I definitely over wrote these. I felt like writing so I let myself go hog wild.

I’ve been drawing the items for Oracle of Seasons, but the going has been slow. Hopefully, by telling the world I have been working on it, I will be inclined to get back to work on the project.

Please use my work personally however you see fit, but do not profit off my efforts without my consent.

Be excellent to everyone, and make sure everyone has access to excellent services, regardless of their demographics.
