Not an artist: Five items from Oracle of Seasons that are tools of the apocalypse

Five items from Oracle of Seasons that are tools of the apocalypse

Magnetic Glove: Found in the Unicorn’s Cave, the magnetic gloves allow Link to push and pull metallic objects based on their weight and polarity. Every time Link activates the gloves, they switch polarity from positive to negative which means the object, or Link if the object is heavy enough, is either repulsed or attracted to the glove. I have used a similar mechanic in my games, but I just gave the glove the ability to manifest a limited form of telekinesis that only works on magnetic metals.

This mechanical fist is a poor replica of the hand of an immortal watcher. With this approximation of the divine, gifted mortals might focus their limited abilities enough to momentarily pierce the veil separating the mortal world from other realms. The wearer might lure a lesser being from the other realms into our world, but even a lesser spirit has the power to unleash untold destruction in the mundane sphere.

Fool’s Ore: When Link is accosted by the treasure made Subrosian brothers, they take the hard-earned Roc’s Feather and give Link the Fool’s ore in an unconsenting exchange. The Fool’s ore can be swung like a sword, and actually deals the most damage of any weapon in Holodrum, the only issue is that Link cannot escape the particular section of Subrosia he encounters the brothers in without stalking the brothers to their secret hiding spot and recovering his magical feather. Upon regaining his trusty feather, Link theoretically returns the fool’s ore back to the brothers.

The elders speak of a time before their grandmothers’ grandmothers were young when the land was green and the air was warm and full of the sounds of life. In those warm times of plenty, the people forgot to make the offerings to the great ancestors in the night sky. Their selfishness was punished when one of the ancestors threw their mighty hammer back to the lands. It’s shining arc was greeted with many days of fire and ash, but after that came the generations of ice and snow. Some believe the ages of cold will end when the mighty hammer is offered back to the ancestor.

Biggoron Sword: This massive two-handed sword cuts in a wide 180-degree arc when swung. Link can only obtain this powerful sword, more powerful than even the master sword, by passing a secret he heard from a Goron in Labrynna’s Rolling Ridge to the Big Goron living atop Mt. Cucco.

The Crusade of Righteous Illumination marches every outward from the holy city of Everflame. While the crusaders see their mission as an inescapable responsibility to bring order to the world, those outside the crusade hear the calls of, “may our every step sanctify this unholy earth!” as a threat to their way of life. The rank and file soldiers of the crusade can be held at bay with material offerings, but spotting the burning greatswords of the Shining Inquisitors means it is already too late to flee.

Bombchu: These living enemy seeking bomb rats can only be obtained if Link passes a secret from a Subrosian living in Labrynna’s Rolling Ridge to their brother back home in Subrosia. Link is not immediately given the bombchus for passing the secret. Instead, he is given the task of cutting all the grass in a chamber in just three throws of the boomerang. This requires the magical boomerang and great skill, but when Link completes the task, he is given a pouch of bombchus. Not wanting the bombchus to be too precious of a resource, Syrup the witch begins selling bombchus at her shope once Link acquires the bombchu satchel.

Hellrats are not the problem, hellrats are a symptom, and the problem is not as easy to solve as simply killing some rats. As these monstrous vermin can only breed in fiery or infernal planes, their presence in any mortal plane means there are gaps in the barriers between planes. Hellrats gnaw and tear at the edges of these splits, until the fabric of reality becomes too threadbare and a great rift can tear open allowing all manner of creatures to spill out.

Happy first Sunday of the new year. If you follow the Gregorian Calendar, I hope you enjoyed the end of 2020 in a spectacular New Year’s Eve. If you spent time with members outside of your household, I hope you get tested for COVID, self-isolate, and monitor yourself for symptoms. Just because vaccines are around, doesn’t mean the threat of the pandemic is over.

I hope you enjoyed my dip into regular posting over the past few weeks. I have been in a bit of a drawing dry spell, but drawing fan art of great new shows really inspired me to get back to it. In fact, I have been working on drawing items from Wind Waker all this week, and I have been enjoying the process again.

Maybe this is the year we can all work together to improve the lives of all people. A rising tide raises all ships, so remember to be excellent to everyone.
