I'm not an artist: Five items from Oracle of Ages found in the sunken district of New Seattle.

Five items from Oracle of Ages found in the sunken district of New Seattle.

Zora’s Flippers: These flippers were created by the great inventor Cheval who created items that help the landlocked venture away from the shore and out into the watery places of the world. Link can find these flippers within Cheval’s tomb in the Yoll Graveyard. Before his death, Cheval designed and built a cavernous tomb with obstacles and puzzles to ensure that only one who is worthy of his gifts could obtain them. The flippers allow Link to swim in the waters of Labrynna and dive briefly to avoid attacks, circumvent obstacles,  and solve puzzles.

The 2050s are remembered as the decade when the polar ice caps melted entirely away and the coasts were flooded under rapidly rising sea levels. They are also remembered for the emergence of urban diving. Divers flocked to the newly sunken city districts, some as explorers and adventurers, while others came as scavengers and thieves looking to loot the places abandoned during the floods.

Mermaid Suit: Link finds this magical suit in the Mermaid’s Cave, a water-themed dungeon that is literally shaped like a mermaid. The suit is a replacement and upgrade to the Zora’s Flippers. With this suit, Link can breathe underwater, swim down to the deepest reaches of the ocean, and swim against rushing water to move upstream against the current. When wearing this suit, many Zora assume that Link is an actual mermaid which implies that the suit’s magic is quite convincing.

These suits were made during the 2030s as a novelty to let people swim like mermaids. The company making the suits was never able to make a profit and eventually collapsed into bankruptcy. Scavengers and adventure divers alike now pay top dollar for functional suits after so many of the world’s cities have become prime diving destinations.

Magic Potion: In Oracle of Ages the magic potion functions like the secret medicine in Link’s Awakening. The magic potion fully restores Link’s health when he loses his last heart if he has a potion in his inventory. These effectively fill the role that bottled fairies fill in other games. In addition to the restorative effects the potions offers Link, a potion is also needed to cure King Zora’s illness. There are a number of ways to get magic potions in Labrynna. Link can buy them from Syrup’s shop, find them inside of a Gasha Nut, or pick up one Maple drops on one of her semi-random appearances.

Various militaries around the world began requiring their forces to be dosed with designer stimulants to ensure they had an edge against less well-funded forces. The number of soldiers serving in such forces ballooned to unsustainable numbers in the conflicts that raged across the globe in the late 2040s. When those conflicts subsided, throngs of stimulant addicted veterans reentered civilian life and, overnight, a new black market for illegal military-grade stimulants was born.

Fairy Powder: Fairy Powder is necessary to lift the curse placed on the Fairy Queen by Veran. Until the curse is lifted, the Fairy Queen is stuck in the form of an Octorok and unable to use her powers to cleanse the seas. The magic powder is hidden in the depths of the Eyeglass Island Library within darkened pit-trap filled rooms with invisible floors. If getting the powder sounds impossible without some sort of help, you’re right. Link must travel through time to find the Book of Seals that contains the much-needed information on how to reach the powder.

Initially, it was only veterans who had any desire for military-grade stimulants. While this remained true for the pure liquid form of the stimulant, a less potent powdered form of the drug had widespread appeal to the masses of people struggling to survive the deplorable conditions resulting from the unchecked concentration of wealth. Those forced to live in the rotting upper stories of drowned high rises or on the flood-prone edges of once-prosperous cities felt they could not thrive so they sought only to dull the pain of their existence.

Hey, things got a bit dark this week. I struggle to envision a bright and hopeful future for the human race. It seems we struggle at getting our heads out of our asses and work together to save the only planet we all share or even agree that all human life has value outside of labor. Hopefully, my view of the future is totally off and we somehow manage to not fuck up the world even more than we already have.

Please use my work personally however you see fit, but do not profit off my efforts without my consent.

I know I say this every week, but be excellent to everyone. That includes being excellent by taking care of the world we share.
