Three animals from Oracle of Ages met on a vision quest for the new year.
Dimitri’s Flute: Link unknowingly selects his animal companion in Oracle of Ages in how he acquires the strange flute. To eventually meet Dimitri and forge a bond with the dodongo, Link should buy the strange flute from the Lynna City Shop when it is available for purchase after completing the Moonlit Grotto. If Link buys the flute, he will eventually run into Dimitri in the lost woods and Dimitri will teach Link a tune to play when he needs help.
Dimitri is a red dodongo that can be ridden. When riding Dimitri, he can chomp enemies and foliage and swim like a raft. Link can also pick up and throw Dimitri with the help of the power bracelet.
Upon entering the spirit world, it is not uncommon for first-time travelers to be visited by a massive turtle spirit. These are avatars of the great turtle that is said to safely carry the world through the cosmos upon its back. The spirit teaches novice wanderers a melody to sing should they wish to return to the material plane. The great turtle's senses are not limitless, so travelers are warned to not wander too far, lest they become lost in the infinite realm of spirits.
Moosh’s Flute: If Link avoids winning or buying a strange flute, he will eventually meet Moosh, the giant flying panda, near Symmetry City. Link will form a bond of friendship with Moosh and receive Moosh’s flute so that he might call the mighty Moosh when he is in need.
Moosh is a giant flying bear. Link can ride him while he slowly flies over large holes. Moosh can’t swim so he asks Link to avoid water whenever he can. To attack, Moosh can smash down to the ground when hovering to crush those beneath.
Many travelers enter the spirit realm in search of answers to questions that have stumped mortal wisdom. Few spirits are concerned with gathering wisdom, and even less are willing to share their hard-won knowledge. With so many looking and so few sharing, it is inevitable that one will meet the winged bear that will answer one question per person, and always in verse.
Ricky’s Flute: If Link earns 50 or more points in the Shooting Gallery after completing the Moonlit Grotto, he may win a strange flute. By winning this flute, Link ensures that he will encounter Ricky the boxing kangaroo and earn Ricky’s flute to call his companion in times of need.
Ricky is a giant boxing kangaroo that has two giant boxing gloves. Link can ride in Ricky’s pouch. While riding, Ricky can punch at enemies and obstacles as well as jump over gaps too large for Link to jump on his own,
Deep in the wilderness of the spirit realm, one is might meet the boundless font of energy that is the wild kangaroo. The spirit's exuberance is so infectious that some learned to seek the spirit out when they feel their connection to the other realm weakening. A brief meeting with the creature can revivify even the bleakest wanderer. One knows the kangaroo is near by the rhythmic beat of its feet on the hard earth.

In Oracle of Ages Link comes into contact with all three of the animal companions at least once during the course of his adventure. Link needs each of their help to overcome an obstacle that he couldn’t avoid on his own. This is a nice way of introducing all three animal companions to players even if they will spend the majority of their time with only one.
