Not an artist: Four crystals from Oracle of Seasons that have a secret.

Four crystals from Oracle of Seasons that have a secret.

Ore Chunks: Ore chunks are the mineral based currency of Subrosia. Just like rupees, Link can find ore chunks just about anywhere, but only in Subrosia. Silver ore chunks are worth one, red chunks are worth five and gold chunks are worth fifty. Link can spend these chunks in the Subrosian Market, but they are hidden someplace inaccessible when Link leaves Subrosia for the sights and sounds of sun kissed Holodrum.

Bismuth crystals are pretty crazy looking but they are a hard mode exercise in perspective when drawing. It is no wonder their oddly artificial looking crystals were used as some of the visual language for Magic the Gathering’s Eldrazi.

This ore was collected from a strange mineral growth that is slowly appearing all over the continent. Scholars are dumbfounded by the fact that the mineral behaves more like a fungus than a stone without any discernible signs of life. Whatever is causing these deposits to form must be getting closer since they are growing faster and faster every day.

Star-Shaped Ore: This special ore can only be dug up on the coast of the Subrosian Sea. Yes, the underground land of Subrosia has its own underground sea. Link must trade this ore for the ribbon that will secure him a date with the ever desirable Rosa, who also happens to carry the key to every locked door in Subrosia. Based on the location, it is my non-canon assumption that the star shaped ore is either a fossilized starfish or molten lava filled a gap made by a starfish that was fleeing the oncoming lava.

Keen eyed observers will note that this crystal is the same one that appeared as the head of the Wooden Sword/Naaru Hammer way back at the beginning of the items from Oracle of Seasons.

Star fragments that fell during the winter of falling stars are highly valued as novelties or trinkets for those who can afford the steep price they demand. Anyone who finds the source of these fragments, a strange city encased in crystal that fell from the heavens, they would be richer than all the kings of the world. That is if they don’t attract the attention of whatever caused the city to crash from the sky in the first place.

Red Ore: This lustrous ore is found in a cave south east of the Subrosian Village. The cave is inaccessible unless Link uses the magnetic glove’s power to pull himself across the otherwise impassible pit. The ore is one half of the metals required to smelt the alloy that is the hard ore.

When the great trickster made their greatest prank, they also burned their last bridge and lost their last friend. With no one to defend their back, the other great ancestors fed the trickster many bowls of wine until the fool lay asleep in a drunken stupor. In that moment of vulnerability, the ancestors cut out the trickster’s heart and cast it into the freezing void where it would stay until lost to memory, or until it stumbled onto a vital world of warm life and curious minds.

It is odd how we can connect memories of experiences with images. I remember drawing the black gem of the red ore listening to some reading of one of Edgar Rice Burrough’s pulp fantasy horror adventures including some search to a temple inhabited by degenerate apes. If that rings any bells for you, I’d love to know the title of that story.

COVID is not going away. Many people have done great work getting their shot as soon as they can, but many people are holding back or ignoring advice about masks, travel, or gatherings. Now is not the time to let COVID take another year from us.

Get your vaccine whenever you can, keep wearing a mask, limit your gatherings, and be excellent to everyone.
